Our beloved mother Raquel Gutierrez passed away on Saturday, March 4th 2023 at the age of 78.  She was born on February 12th 1945, in Matamoros, Mexico and relocated to East Chicago in 1973 where she resided for 40 years.

We are heartbroken to lose someone so special.  She was a wonderful woman who immensely loved her family.  She dedicated her entire life to her husband, children, and grandchildren.  Raquel was known and referred to as “Bita”, not only by her grandchildren, but by all that knew her.  Bita’s face would light up and she would smile.

Raquel was born on February 12th 1945 to her dearest parents Jesus Barrera and Antonia Vela who preceded her in death, along with her loving husband Antonio Gutierrez and her beloved son Abelardo Gutierrez, grandsons Luis Antonio Mesa and Israel Barrera.

She is survived by her loving children Maria (Alberto) Leon, Anthony (Nancy) Gutierrez, Rafaela (Luis) Mesa, Alberto Gutierrez, Eduardo (Michelle) Gutierrez, and Laura Barrera.  Beloved grandchildren Mia Leon, Claudia Gutierrez, Adam Gutierrez, Daniel Gutierrez, Andrew Gutierrez, Matthew Gutierrez, Jeremy Mesa, Grisel Mesa, Sebastian Mesa, Adrean Mesa, Lilia (Christian) Kellar, Abel Gutierrez, Benjamin Gutierrez, Elizabeth Gutierrez, Eric (Micky) Gutierrez, Richard Gutierrez, Kayla Gutierrez, Edwardo Nathaniel Gutierrez, Esteban Barrera, Victoria Moreno.  Beloved great-grandchildren Aubrey Gutierrez, Kingston Kellar, Christian Gutierrez, Ayden Gutierrez, Yanni Gutierrez, Ricardo Gutierrez, Marilyn Gutierrez, Ezra Barrera.  Beloved sister to Ramiro (Elizabeth) Villarreal, Jesus Barrera, and Victor Barrera.  Many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Calumet Park Funeral 7535 Taft St. Merrillville, IN on Sunday March 12th 2023 from 2:00 – 8:00 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St Matthias Roman Catholic Church 101 W. Burrell Dr. Crown Point IN. on Monday March 13th 2023 at 11:00 am.

Interment to follow mass at Ridgelawn/Mount Mercy Cemetery 4401 W Ridge Road Gary, IN 46408.

Please join us in honoring our beloved mother by wearing the color lilac to the viewing on March 12th.   Bita will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend.

My (dad ) Victor Barrera Sr always talked about her. He’s saddened by her passing. He loved he loved her very much and will be missed.
I remember her when I was very young in Mexico. I do remember her voice. For some reason it always made me listen. Lol Of course we were up to nothing
