Petros Karas, age 87, of Crown Point, IN passed away at home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 4, 2024.

He was born in Galatia, Greece on February 23, 1936. Petros was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years: Eleni Karas;  his loving parents: Dimitrios and Kokona Karampotzekidis; his in-laws: Kosmas and Anastasia Saricos; his brothers-in-law: Harris Tafakis, Panagiotis Kontogiorgos, Panagiotis Saricos, and Thomas Sarikos; his sister in law: Marianthi Sarikos.

Petros is survived by his children: Jimmy Karas and Anastasia (Kostas) Koutouvas; grandchildren: Gabrielle (Richard) Hines, Katerina (Michael) Stam, Eleni (Daniel) Priewe; great-grandchildren: Petros ( Peter) and Anastasia (Annie) Priewe; sisters: Anna Kontogiorgos and Stratia Tafakis; brother: Theofilos (Maria) Karas; sister-in-law: Milka Saricos; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members and dear friends. He immigrated from Greece in 1962 and he never forgot his roots. He was a Sergeant in the army. He loved to garden with his wife and take care of his yard. He loved to listen to music and spend time with his family. He was loved by anyone who knew him and brought joy to every room. He was always there to help others when they were in need without a second thought. He was a devout Orthodox Christian and member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Merrillville, IN. Family and Friends are invited for a visitation on Monday, January 8, 2024 from 3-7 p.m. at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN 46410. Trisagion (the prayer service) will be offered at 5:00 p.m. with Father Dimitri Burikas officiating. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., directly at SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St., Merrillville, IN 46410. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN.
