Peter George Mays, 73, of Demotte, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point. He was born on May 21, 1952, in Gary, to the late Harold Wharey Mays and Mary Louise (Dowdy) Mays.
Peter is survived by his siblings, Douglas Mays, Roger (Konnie) Mays, and Lisa Mays; nieces and nephews, Michael (Kelly) Mays, Joyce Mays, Paul (Stacie) Mays, Jacqueline Herr, and Carrie (Jay) Mayden; great nieces and nephews, Cameron Mays, Christopher Mays, Alyssa Mays, Leah Mays, Brendan Herr, Jenna Mayden, and Jack Mayden; special lifelong friends, Betz Bodak, and Dave Rolan; and a loving host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.
Peter proudly graduated from Purdue University and went on to work as a corporate executive for Ace Hardware in California for over 35 years. Throughout his life, Peter enjoyed fishing alongside his brother, Douglas, and hunting with his close friend, Dave. He also could be found spending time with his beloved family and friends. In more recent years, Peter’s sister, Lisa, and friend, Betz, would have ‘Sundays with Pete’, where they would gather together to share laughs and play the card game, Push.
Peter will best be remembered as a quiet, humble, and kind man who would always be there to help someone in need. He had a dry sense of humor that would light up a room in laughter, while always being gracious and generous to those around him. He, along with all the love and joy he shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts he touched throughout his life.
In accordance with Peter’s wishes, cremation has been chosen. A memorial celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft St, Merrillville, IN 46410, with visitation from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and a service to follow at 11:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow the celebration of life at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
