Norman D. Smith, 83, passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love of his family at home on Friday, May 10, 2024. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Gloriann; his beloved daughter, Kristen (Dave); cherished granddaughter, Sophia; and many extended family and friends.
Norman graduated from Lew Wallace High School, class of 1958. He went on to earn degrees at Bradley University and Perdue University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and stayed in the Army Reserves for 27 years.
To say that Norman lived to serve others and keep himself busy is an understatement.
He was deeply involved with the Freemasons beginning with receiving his Entered Apprentice Degree in Glen Park Lodge No. 732 on November 12th, 1968. He was Passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft on February 25th, 1969, and then Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on May 13th, 1969. Throughout his time with the Masons, he served as Chaplain and Tyler of the Lodge, a Noble of Orak Shrine, a member of the Motor Patrol, and a transport driver for the Shriner’s Hospital – an honor he was immensely proud of. On August 7th, 2010, he joined the Valparaiso York Rite and was exalted to the Holy Royal Arch, was greeted as a Cryptic Mason and Knighted as a Knight Templar. He was also a member of the Valparaiso Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees and Firinne Chapter of Knight Masons and a member of the Nightstalkers Chapter of National Sojourners, serving as its founding member. He was honored to receive his 50-year Gold Award on May 13, 2019, and in November of 2022, received the Commandery Distinguished Service Award and was made an Honorary Past Commander in the Valparaiso Commandery No.28.
Norman knew the value of work, but also excelled in leisure. Along with the work that he did with the Mason’s and the Shriner’s, he was an avid hunter, fisher, sportsman, and traveler. He worked as a mechanic and appreciated being able to work with his hands – around the house, in the yard, or on his cars. He was passionate about Corvettes and would find enjoyment in taking drives.
There wasn’t anybody who met Norman that didn’t love his wicked sense of humor. His heart was as big as his laugh and there was nothing in the world he wouldn’t do for his loved ones or strangers alike.
Norman will be truly missed and fondly remembered by all who were blessed to have known him.
Visitation will be at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel (7535 Taft Street, Merrillville) on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 12 until 1 pm, at which time Norman will be celebrated with Military Honors and Masonic Service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Shriner’s Hospital. For more information, call 219-736-5840.
