Mary Kathryn Malone, was born August 21, 1934 to the union of Elijah and Elizabeth Dobbs in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the eldest of five children. Her siblings included Elizabeth, Barbara Jean, Gwendolyn, and Leon Dobbs. Her early education was obtained in Atlanta where she was an active member of Allen Temple Church. She spent her high school years in Battle Creek, Michigan where she graduated and was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Her musical talents were utilized in both churches as director of the children’s choir at Allen Temple and organist at Mt. Zion.

Kathryn attended Clark Atlanta University where she earned a B.A. Degree in Business Education. During her senior year her choir director Dr. Wendell Whallum, introduced her to a student attending Gammon Theological Seminary. In 1957 she was united in matrimony to that student, Rev Hezekiah Stewart Malone, and moved to Chicago, Illinois where he was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Mark United Methodist Church. This union produced two sons; Kyle Stewart and Marc Kevin and the family resettled in Gary, Indiana when Rev. Malone was assigned to the Northwest Indiana District of the United Methodist Church.

Kathryn loved learning and had a passion for teaching. She earned a M.A. Degree in Early Childhood Education and Administration from Roosevelt University in 1964, and an Ed.D in Education and Administration from Ball State University in 1975. She enjoyed a 40-year career in education ultimately retiring from the Chicago Public School system where she served in many roles from teacher to administrator. She was also a guest lecturer at various colleges and universities in the Chicagoland area.

Kathryn was a woman of conviction, faith, and service. Included in her career path was involvement in community and civic service including over sixty years as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she initiated in 1955 at Sigma Chapter Clark Atlanta University and in 1964 joined Beta Nu Chapter in Gary, Indiana where she served as recording secretary in subsequent years.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Rev. Hezekiah Stewart Malone; Barbara Jean Fisher and Elizabeth Dobbs, sister; and Leon Dobbs, brother. She is survived by her sons Marc and Kyle, daughter-in-law, Dionne; grandson, Noah; granddaughters Zion and Jordan; and sister Gwendolyn Dobbs.

My name is Brenda Todd and I had the pleasure of being Mrs Kathryn’ s beautician . From the first time I met her I knew she was special and knowledgeable, wonderful and loving woman …She attended my bridal shower , my wedding, my daughters baby shower she even attended a church event I had invited her to . She always showed up dressed to impress and let’s not forget about her high heels. (Lol) . Over the years I have grown to love and care about her I remember her telling me … oh I’m going to get out this wheelchair because I’m going to Paris this year to see Noah in the Olympics!! I’m going to miss her and this is no joke I was just thinking to my self ( um I wonder how Mrs . Kathryn is doing .. she hasn’t called me about getting her hair done … Now I know why …. Rest in Heaven Mrs. Kathryn 🙏🏽❤️😇😪

Oh my…Kyle and Marc I’m so sorry to hear about this. Mrs. Malone was a jewel. I remember her encouraging me during church choir practice. Also, Pam reminded me of those high heeled fuzzy house shoes she wore when I came by for state flute competition practice. What a wonderful woman. What a wonderful life.🥰

Ms Malone was a wonderful lady and role model. I met her at the beauty salon and she was always very friendly and well dressed. She carried herself well and loved her family. I’m so glad that our paths crossed in life.

Ms. Mary Kathryn was an incredible woman. I enjoyed talking with her while my mom was at Bickford. She wore a smile on her face, always! She was a pure joy and a kind soul. She was one of a kind. I am so sad…she was a genuine kind hearted person. I didn’t know her long but she made a lasting impression. My deepest condolences for the Malone family. She wanted so bad to be able to attend the Olympics and watch her grandson in Paris. Now she will be able to. She will be able to be the families guardian angel. Rest easy, Ms. Mary Kathryn! This world is a better place because of you.

I had the pleasure of ensuring that Ms. Mary was safe and comfortable during her final days. Every day with her was such a joy. She made sure that no one felt like a stranger and everyone was seen and heard. She loved very strongly and when it was time to impress, made sure she was dressed to the nines. We send all of our love to the entire family. Rest well Dr. Malone❤️🤍

Remarkable souls live on in the lives they positively impacted. I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Malone but over the last 12 years or so, I got to hear all about her wonderful, courageous, and remarkably loving spirit. I am sending my love and prayers to Kyle, Marc, her grandchildren, and her other family members and friends. May the ripples of her undying love for you be felt forever.

The Brookwood Neighborhood will miss and lovingly remember our friend Kathryn Malone My husband and I met Kathy over 15 years ago. We became fast friends bonding around Ball State University, gardening, charter schools and many events. Kathy always made us feel like we were in her family sharing loving stories of Kyle and Marc. I still laugh when I think about her bringing Noah to our home to play with our cat Midnight. We will always love and remember Kathryn Malone.

I am the Rev. Dr. Barbara Morgan, a true friend and confidant of Dr. Mary Kathryn Malone. She was my inspiration! A woman of class and culture. She was small in stature but large in all the ways that matter most. She was a professional in everything she participated in, and she always gave her best and she expected excellence in return. She and I would get together and talk about everything under the sun over a meal, and I loved to hear of her many adventures in travel. She was a true of woman of God and she lived out her faith at all times without effort. She knew who she was and she was not impressed easily by anybody and everybody. When you were in her presence, you knew that she was a woman of distinction. She didn’t tolerate any non-sense and you knew you had to be about the business in her presence. I genuinely loved her and always will. She loved her family and she was so very proud of every one of them. She was always talking about her beautiful grandchildren, and she was determined to get to Paris to see her beloved grandson, Noah!!! Well, I’m sure she’ll be there… but not in the way we would prefer, but she’ll be there rooting him on from the bleachers of Heaven!! I shall truly miss my little friend in her 3-inch heels!! I admired her and little did she know, I learned so much from her and patterned my life after her. I shall truly miss her and our many conversations together. But I know where to find her!!! For she now dwells in the secret place of the Most High, in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her beloved husband, Dr. Hezekiah Malone!!! I’m sure they’ve all welcomed her home!!! Rest on my dear friend, I shall see you after while!

My condolences to the Malone family. I had the pleasure of being her hairstylist. She ALWAYS wore heels to the salon! I even shared where she could find some in her size and she called to tell me that she over did it and bought too many!! I will miss her smile! She was definitely a woman of class! Rest Well Mrs. Mary Kathryn Malone❤️
