Maria Elena Rodriguez

1961

-

2025

Maria Elena (Flores) Rodriguez, lovingly known as Nena to many, age 64, of East Chicago, passed away peacefully Monday morning, August 4, 2025 in Valparaiso, Indiana. She was born on June 2nd, 1961 to Richard Flores Sr. and Maria Elena Flores at St. Catherine Hospital. She is survived by her two daughters, Sophia (Steve) Rodriguez-King  of Cedar Lake and Rachel (Bobby) Schaefer-Murray of Valparaiso; one son, Anthony Rodriguez of Chicago; three grandchildren: George, Kaydon, and Libby; Otto; her two brothers: Raymond (Sandra) Flores and Robert (Rayo) Flores; her nephews: Raymond Jr., Miguel (Kaylee), Alejandro, and Robert Jr.; and Sidy. Preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Flores, Jr.

Maria attended Bishop Noll Institute before receiving her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, IN. She moved to Pittsburgh, 23, where a piece of her heart remains. She raised her children in Northwest Indiana, making many friends and memories in Highland. She pursued careers and found her calling as a disability rights advocate. She loved her mother deeply. She misused quotation marks and “always” wore her heart on her sleeve. She would lose herself to movies and music. She became alive when hosting events. She had fiery passions for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Boston Celtics. She was warmed by people, fond memories, and all that life could bring. She held incredible faith in God.

Funeral services will begin at 9:00 am, Monday, August 18th, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Valparaiso; mass will be held at 10:00 am with Father Roque Meraz officiating; burial in Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family would be appreciated.

My sweet friend, I will miss your unique laughter, we had some rib hurting laughs about some of life simple things that happened. I was amazed by Your inner strength that God gave you to endure your suffering these last few years of pain, health and life challenges. But you always held on to your faith no matter what came your way. God welcomed you with open arms and lifted you to the Glory of God. I know your parents were there to greet and hug you. Rest in peace Nena. I know you got your wings and are walking and I am sure running in heaven. You will be missed.
