REMEMBERING

Kathy Metz - Barreiro

1954

-

2024

Katherine Barreiro (nee Metz), 69, of Lake Station, suddenly and unexpectedly left this world to transition into her eternal life on Sunday, February 25, 2024. She was born to Patricia and Andrew “Rudy” Metz on November 20, 1954, in Gary. She was a graduate of East Gary Edison, class of 1973.
She has left to cherish her memory, her mother Patricia Metz, of Lake Station; her 2 beautiful children, Kimberly Metz and Jamie Metz, both of Lake Station; her beloved granddaughter, Felicia Koby; 2 cherished great grandsons, Kaine Koby and Roman Slack; brothers, Ron (Connie) Metz of Hobart and Anthony “Jimmy” Metz of Lake Station; aunt, Margaret Strnad of Lake Station; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her precious cats: Itty, Macho Man, Cici, Little One, and all of her stray outdoor kitties.
Preceding her in death are her father, Andrew “Rudy” Metz; her best friend and partner of 27 years, Lyn Worley; and the father of her children, David Lara.
Kathy was a hard worker and held many jobs throughout her life, ultimately retiring as a custodian from River Forest Community Schools. She was lovingly known as ‘the crazy cat lady’, always tending to the strays that kept coming around. She found joy in her cats, both indoor and outdoor, and never left them cold or hungry.
Kathy could often be found outside with Lyn gardening, planting, grilling, or out in the garage listening to classic rock on the radio and enjoying a cold beer. Her love for her family was unmatched and her great grandsons were her whole world – there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them. They will miss their ‘No-No’ dearly.
A Celebration of Life for Kathy and Lyn will be held from 5 PM – 9 PM on Friday, March 29, 2024, at the American Legion Post 100 in Lake Station. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to the family.
Cremation services entrusted to Calumet Park Hobart/Portage Chapel and Crematory. Burial of cremated remains will occur at a later date. For information, call 219-940-3791.

Kathy was always a go getter. Her life wasn’t easy and she never gave up. I know she treasured her children and her granddaughter Felicia and the two great grandsons. When she was about 10 she was a spit fire so full of energy. I used to go stay with them in the summer and lived it. We had our issues but I never stopped loving her.
She would be very PROUD of Kim and what she has done and is doing. Walk on Cuz and be free. God Bless you and your loved ones left behind.
