It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of Jose O. Martinez Sr. of Gary, IN on April 22nd, 2024 at the age of 81. He was our beloved Papi, Pai, Hermano, Tio and Friend.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Priscy (Angel), Margie, and Angie (Ricardo), and daughter-in-law Brenda; grandchildren: Genesis (Richy), Jose III (Betsy), Gabriella, Josue “Manny”, Anabeth, Jasmine, Angel, Cristian, and Carlos; and great grandchildren: Adriel, Cataleya, Giovanni and Valeria. His legacy will continue to live on and thrive through these loved ones. He will also be greatly missed by his sisters and brothers; Margarita “Gotin”, Esther, Rafi, Jaime and Felo; as well as so many nieces and nephews. Oscar was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maria Angelica “Gela” Martinez; his beloved son, Jose “Joey” O. Martinez Jr; Parents, Benigno Martinez and Nicolasa ” Sasa” Cruz; and siblings; Ramon and Toño.

Jose Oscar Martinez Sr. was born in Juana Diaz, P.R. on June 30th, 1942, and was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle and friend. He was a great man who served his country in the U.S. Navy (Vietnam War) for 4 years and he had a long career as a Sergeant with the Gary Police Department, which he retired from after over 30 years.

He was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of Primera Iglesia Cristiana Disipulos de Cristo and would always be there to help anyone when needed. He loved to play dominos and was a fan of baseball and watching the Chicago Cubs. He was a larger than life person and was fondly known as “The Enforcer”. He was respected by all and though he seemed tough, he had the biggest heart. He was also a protective father, he loved his family fiercely. He continued that protective nature and always made sure we were fine though we were all adults until the day he passed. We will forever keep you in our hearts and you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace and in the arms of God, Mami and Joey. Until we meet again. Te Amamos para siempre!

A visitation will be held at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel (7535 Taft St., Merrillville, IN, 46410) on Friday, April 26th, 2024, from 4:00pm-8:00pm, with Celebration of Life service at 6:30pm. Burial Service will be Saturday, April 27th, 2024, at 10:00am, also at the Chapel. Pastor Juaquin Rodriguez to officiate. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery (2305 W 73rd Ave Merrillville IN 46410).
