John “Babe” Tenorio Jr, age 83, of Berlin, MD, and formerly of Lake Station, IN passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 25, 2026, with his wife, Cathy, by his side. He was born on September 2, 1942, in Gary, IN to the late John and Violet Tenorio.
John was a 1961 River Forest High School graduate. After graduation, he worked for US Steel for 25 years and 20 plus years for US Cable. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing horseshoes, bowling, coaching softball, watching his sons play baseball, and fishing. And let’s not forget the “kissing” of the cross necklace (if you know you know) while doing any activity. He would also umpire baseball and softball games where he was jokingly given the nickname “Blind-eyed Babe.” He loved playing cards with his family. He cherished his hours long phone conversations with his sister, Karen Mae, special niece “Little” Karen, and granddaughter Megan. He was a member of the Hobart Moose from its days in downtown Hobart. He helped bring “dart ball” to the membership and create leagues. He followed them to their new location where he called bingo for many years.
He was also a passionate Chicago Bears, Cubs and Notre Dame fan. Above all else, John was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family was his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment. He was a believer in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Lake Station, IN and Bethany United Methodist Church in Berlin, MD.
John is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cathy (nee Scasny) Tenorio, son Greg (Peggy) Tenorio of Lake Station, daughters Heather (Ray) Nornes of Berlin, MD, Stacey Tenorio of Lake Station, sister Karen (Ron) Szwedo, grandchildren Erin, Skye, Derek, Megan, Ray, Eli, and Garrett along with 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, beloved son, John “Johnny” Tenorio, brother Bob (Linda) Tenorio, Sisters Mary Lou Tenorio, and Juanita Allison.
