Jerry Konopasek, age 62, from Schererville, IN, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 4, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Surviving him are his wife of nearly 25 years, Marcia (née Hernandez); son, Stephen (Natalie) Konopasek and grandson, Luke; daughter, Sarah Carroll and granddaughters, Alexia and Kirra; eight siblings: Mary (Paul) Poparad, Linda (Randy) Lyness, Donna (Kevin) Chaney, Judy (Wayne) Govert, Betty Konopasek, Diane (John)
Haseman, Peggy (Dennis) Grimmer, and Kenneth (Darlene) Konopasek; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Donald and Therese Konopasek.
During his teens, the town of Griffith recognized Jerry as a local hero after he apprehended a purse-snatcher who had attacked an elderly woman in the parking lot of Emsings grocery store. For his valor, Jerry received awards from both the Griffith Chamber of Commerce and police commission.
After graduating from Griffith High School, he worked at Inland Steel and eventually worked as an interior design consultant and painter.
Jerry enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, gardening and being in the great outdoors. He was a practical joker and loved to make people laugh while visiting with his friends and family.
Jerry’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the I.C.U. nurses and staff at Franciscan Health Dyer who so very diligently and kindly cared for Jerry during his final hours.
Friends may visit with Jerry’s family from 9:00 – 11:15 AM, followed by a brief memorial service on Friday, June 10, 2022 at
Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN.
