James R. Sullivan, of Valparaiso, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026 at the age of 87. He was a resident at Green Oaks Assisted Living. He formerly resided in Merrillville, Highland, Portage, and was very well liked by all who knew him.

James, who also went by “Ron” or “Jim”, was a dutiful member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4047 Holy Trinity for 43 years and an assembly member of Santa Maria Venegas Assembly #2712 for 20 years.

In his lifetime, He dedicated his working career to Martin Oil, Speedway and Gas City.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Katherine M.Sullivan; and dear wife, Mary Catherine Sullivan.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Dennis Sullivan, Maggie Mataitis, David Sullivan, and Thomas Sullivan; his cherished grandchildren: Steven (Michelle) Rosenbaum, Stephanie (Crystal) Burch, Kyle Biggs, Danny (Shelby) Sullivan, Kristina Sullivan, Brittany Sullivan, and Brian Sullivan; 11 treasured great grandchildren; sisters: Kathy (Jerry) Wojkovich and Donna (late Robert) Ramage, and special friend, Peggy Mickles; along with many other close friends and family.

Memorial visitation will be Thursday, January 15, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM at Calumet Park Hobart-Portage Chapel (370 N. County Line Road, Hobart, Indiana 46342). James was my dear friend..we did everything together..he was such a kind gentle man..we were in the same age bracket and we would compare notes..we had lots of laughs…he loved a restaurant in Wanatah delicious fish..we would go as often as we could..he also gave me driving lessons..we were both members of Prime Timers in Ogden Dunes….
