James Melvin Rodman Sr., 85, of Valparaiso, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Community Hospital in Munster surrounded by loving family. He was born on December 26, 1940, in Gary, to the late James Daniel and Mary Madeline (Hart) Rodman. James served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1964 and was stationed on the USS Waccamaw. He then worked as a union carpenter from 1968 to 1973 and then as a millwright for Bethlehem Steel in the mechanical department from 1974 until his retirement in 2015.
James was notably a proud Mason, earning the title Master Mason in 1971, and earning his 50-year pin in 2021. He originated at the Gary Masonic Lodge #677 and then became a part of the Valparaiso Masonic Lodge #137. James also became a member of the Shriner’s in 1990.
In his spare time, James could be found enjoying a crime or mystery series on the television, keeping up on the daily news, or spending time at the Banta Activity Center in Valparaiso. Most importantly, James adored being able to spend time with his grandchildren, who brought him so much joy and love.
