Henry “Hank” Vernia, age 84, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family.
Born on November 18, 1941, in Gary, Hank was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School and a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana. He dedicated 43 years of service to U.S. Steel, where he earned the respect of his coworkers and was a proud member of United Steelworkers Local 1014.
A man of deep faith, Hank was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Chesterton and formerly a member of Our Lady of Consolation in Merrillville. He was also a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, finding great meaning in serving his church and community.
Above all else, Hank was devoted to his family. He shared a loving marriage of almost 65 years with his beloved wife, Barbara Vernia (nee Roncsak) and together they built a life filled with love, faith, and cherished memories.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Stephen Vernia and his wife, Teri; his daughter, Linda Pavletich and her husband, Peter; his treasured grandchildren: Charlotte Vernia, Rocco (Carley Berman) Vernia, Michael Pavletich, and Hannah Pavletich; and his sisters-in-law, Nancy Doty and Mary Ann Vernia. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Rocco and Rosalie; his sister, Rose Fiatak; and his brother, Carl.
Hank was an enthusiastic sports fan who faithfully cheered on the Chicago Bears and White Sox, and Notre Dame through every season. Those who knew Hank will remember his quiet strength, unwavering faith, kindness, sense of humor, and dedication to his family. His life was a testament to the values he held dear and his example will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
His family finds comfort in knowing that Hank has been welcomed into eternal peace and reunited with those who have gone before him. His family also wished to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff of Dunes Hospice for their help and support, especially his nurse, Sharon and aid, Deanna.
A Memorial Mass for Hank will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 9th, 2026 at St. Patrick’s Parish (638 N Calumet • Chesterton, IN 46304). For more information, call 219-736-5840.
