George Martinez, of Gary, IN, passed away October 25, 2023, at the age of 58. He was born in Chicago, IL to Guadalupe Martinez and Guadalupe Garcia Martinez, both of whom precede him in death. He is survived by his long-time love, Nancy Mejia; his beloved children: Christina Mejia, Ermelinda Mejia, Jose Mejia, Venessa Mejia, Veronica Mejia, Alejandro Mejia and Maricella Mejia; 6 treasured grandchildren; and a host of siblings and extended family.

George woke every morning ready to get the day started – enjoying breakfast before heading outside to feed the birds.  He loved spending his time outside, at the beach or out walking, or just sitting outside to enjoy the sunshine.  He would catch a basketball game whenever it was possible and could often be found teaching his little ones how to sink a three pointer.  Known as “Papa” to his grandkids, he was always ready with a hug and a smile.  His family was the pride of his life and he was always there for his children with a helping hand and sound advice.  He loved like no other, and will be dearly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.

Visitation will be Friday, November 10, 2023, from 10:00 until time of service at 1:00 PM at Rendina Funeral Home (5100 Cleveland Street, Gary). Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery. For information, call 219-980-1141.
