REMEMBERING

Evelyn Sue Moreland

Sue Moreland is with Jesus. She joins her husband, Rev. Albert Moreland, and sons Terry and Bill, who preceded her death. She was looking forward to this reunion in Glory.

Albert and Sue were married in 1950. With the blessing of their families, they went alone to the pastor’s house. She wore a blue dress, and Albert was so nervous they sat during the ceremony. In a few years they welcomed their first son, Richard. He was followed by Terry, Bill, Sherry, and Cindy. When the kids grew, grandchildren and great-grandchildren followed.

Dedicated to the ministry of Christ, Albert pastored several churches in Northwest Indiana. Spreading the gospel was his passion, not his profession. Sue, always by his side, served as a devoted Pastor’s wife. Stepping in where needed, she joyfully served working in the kitchen, cleaning, or teaching Sunday School. She especially loved watching over the babies in the nursery.

An overall witness for Jesus, Sue focused on visiting with people who were sick, shut in, or those who felt forgotten. Her favorite hymn was “Let Others See Jesus In You” and she often quoted Psalm 19:14: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

She volunteered at nursing homes and as an assistant for St. Mary Medical Center in the Pastoral Care Department. In her spare time, she played the part of a pioneer at Chelberg farm for school field trips. Affectionately nicknamed “Grandma Sue,” she was a grandmother to anyone who needed to feel loved.

Later in life, she did not hesitate to unselfishly provide care to her son, Bill, when he suffered a brain injury. Sue was an excellent, self-appointed nurse. When they both relocated to Demotte, IN, she instinctively took care of Nathan and Tracy, as well. She overfed their dogs, making them spoiled and fat.

She spent her latter days watching sermons, old gameshows, and cooking tutorials on YouTube. Sue adored her dog, Odie Otis Moreland. “Graniel” loved to spend time with Nathan, who she affectionately called her “Best Friend.”

Albert and Sue were the BEST grandparents. They never passed on an invitation to attend a school event. Christmas morning, they would travel to the local grandkids’ houses to see what Santa had gifted them. They were always very impressed with the gifts, no matter how silly they were. It was a special tradition.

Grandad had an unforgettable laugh, and Grandma ate more sugar than any human reasonably should. They gave loving and Biblically rooted advice. Together, they prayed for the salvation of their grandchildren. Audibly. Daily.

Grandma continued with this act of love up until her death. As her memories faded, the desire to see her family come to God never waned. It weighed on her heart, and years ago, she asked it to be mentioned in her obituary. It was her sincere hope that when she was called home others would continue to pray that her family would put their unwavering faith in Christ.

Albert and Sue worked to make Heaven too crowded. I am SO PROUD to be their granddaughter. I will be eternally grateful that their lives’ mission introduced me to the faith that led me to Jesus. I am comforted knowing I will be with them again. If you are finding yourself feeling unsure of that confidence, Nathan and I would love to chat with you. – Tracy
