Portage resident Colleen Rae Moehl ( nee Dotson), faded from this Earth September 8, 2025 at St. Anthony’s Majestic Care Center, Crown Point, IN. She was 88.
Colleen graduated from Hobart High School, co-valedictorian, class of 1955. She worked at U.S. Stee while pursuing a college degree until she met Raymond Moehl a ta holiday dance. They were wed in 1958, and began a family shortly after. They remained to get her until his death. Widowed at an early age, Colleen diligently worked a varied field of office positions, most notably with the Portage Township School system for 12 years. Later years saw her behind the desk with the Drifting Dunes Council of Girl Scouts. Colleen’s last working years were at Metro Metals, from which she retired in 2002.
Colleen will always be remembered as a caring individual, ready with what ever help she could offer. Whether it be providing a lunch for the child without or aiding a nervous student through first-day jitters; she placed the needs of others above her own. This was her standard, giving without regard to her own situation. Family members are continuously graced with stories that begin, “I remember your mother…” A voracious reader, she was on a fist-name basis with local librarians for years. Chief among Colleen’s favorites were mysteries, often tearing through several books a week. When her eyes began failing, she devoured their television counterparts; with a healthy side of Hallmark romances for dessert. Colleen regretted her shelf of unread books, tales gone unexplored. Family memories find her on the couch, novel in hand, at peace with the world.
