Carolyn Jeane Johnson (nee Sorba), age 77, passed away surrounded by her family on September 5th, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on August 26th , 1945, in East Chicago, Indiana, to the late Walter F. and Mary L. (Etchison) Sorba. She attended Holy Family Church, until the 8th grade then graduated from Lew Wallace High School, Gary, Indiana, in 1963.
Carolyn received her beauticians license, managed KFC in Hobart and Portage, Indiana and was a co-owner of White Hen Pantry in Portage, Indiana for over 12 years. She retired from St. Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart after 11 years of working in the cafeteria at the age of 70.
Carolyn was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in ink, working in her gorgeous garden, even receiving a degree from the Purdue Master Gardener Program in Northwest Indiana. She loved dancing and danced all the way to Valentine’s Day 2022. She enjoyed all types of music and attended many concerts. She was also known for hosting great parties at home.
Carolyn spent the second half of her life living it to the fullest. Taking on adventures like zip lining in Mexico and sky diving from a plane in Arizona. She loved traveling with family and friends, even over seas with her loving partner, Ronald Eaton.
Carolyn will be remembered for being a caring, selfless, loving mother, grand-mother, and Gigi (great grand-mother), partner, family member, and close friend to all.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter Teresa (Jim) Scheuer of Lake Station; two grand-daughters Amanda (Ricky) Herrera, of Portage, Ashley (Scott) Scheuer, of Chesterton; two great grand-children, Elijah and Brody Herrera; sister; Susan (Sorba) Binkley, of Miller; sister-in-law, Betty (Chafee) Sorba of Hobart; partner of 14 years, Ronald Eaton, of Portage; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers; Walter K., Alan D. (Judy), and Dennis L. (Margo) Sorba ; brother-in-law, John Binkley.
Carolyn generously donated her body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine. This gift will contribute significantly to the advancement of health science education in the state of Indiana.
