Caroline Kay Buchanan (née Stout)
“Grandma Kay”
Caroline Kay Buchanan, age 83, peacefully passed away at home on Monday, October 12, 2026.
Caroline is survived by her children: John Buchanan of Valparaiso, Joseph Buchanan of Portage, Pamila (Roger) Buchanan of Portage, and Melvin Buchanan of Valparaiso; grandchildren: Javier (Amber) Buchanan, Patricia (Zivko) Prentoski, Brittany (Marco) Wojciechowski, and Jacob (Ajalae) Wojciechowski; and great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Noah, Elena, Gavin, and Leo.
Caroline took great joy in being a bonus mom and grandma to all our extended family, friends, and neighbors. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Throughout her life, she showed incredible strength and resilience, battling breast cancer over the course of 23 years and beating it twice. She found joy in the simple things in life, including sewing, spending time with cats, and getting lost in a good book. Above all, she was a strong believer in God, and her faith remained a vital part of her life. She will be remembered for her strength, her love for the things that brought her happiness, and the faith that guided her throughout her journey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin O. and Georgia I. Stout; siblings: Edwin O’Neil Stout, George Franklin Stout, and Anita Jones; and common-law partner, Gerald J. Hac (2004).
Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 370 N. County Line Road, Hobart. A private burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery.
