Michael Wayne Erdelac, born May 4, 1940, in Gary, Indiana, lived a life marked by quiet dedication, steady service, and enduring passions. The only child of Michael and Mary Erdelac, Wayne grew up in Gary and graduated from Emerson High School.
Shortly after graduation, Wayne answered the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on October 14, 1958, and completed four years of service before returning home after an Honorable Discharge on October 13, 1962. His time in the Air Force included a 1-year tour in the Middle East and remained a point of pride following in the footsteps of his father’s service in the military during World War II.
Upon returning to civilian life, Wayne began what would become a 33 year career with U.S. Steel, Gary Works, serving as a Coiler Inspector in the Sheet Products Department. He retired on May 31, 1996, remembered by colleagues for his reliability, work ethic, and steady presence.
Wayne’s interests reflected both curiosity and craftsmanship. He loved to travel, especially to the wide-open landscapes of Arizona and the coastal beauty of California. His passion for airplanes began in childhood, building model aircraft with meticulous care. Over the decades, he maintained and expanded his model airplane collection, a hobby that brought him joy throughout much of his life.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Michael and Mary Erdelac.
A private interment will take place on October 14, 2026, at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana, where Wayne will be laid to rest with quiet dignity alongside his father and mother.
