Julio Infante, 72, of Lake Station, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
He was born in Gary, Indiana, to Apolinar Sr. and Cecilia Infante, and continued to call the region home until his passing. He graduated from Lew Wallace in 1971, and dedicated 37 years of service to Inland Steel, ultimately retiring from the Plant 4 Electric Furnace in 2009.
Julio, who was more often affectionately known as “Uncle Ju”, was a tried-and-true baseball fan, and spent many afternoons keeping score at White Sox and Gary Railcats games in the spring and summer. In the winter, he was an enthusiastic armchair coach for the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks, and Wolves.
He enjoyed time outdoors, always looking for an opportunity to go for a walk and do some birdwatching. Music followed Julio wherever he went. Whether he was working around the house and yard, enjoying the company of his family on holidays, or sitting around the fire pit on weekends, Julio’s favorite stations would be playing.
Julio’s smile and sense of humor will be lovingly remembered and treasured by all who had been blessed to know him, but especially his sisters: Esther Cruz, Rosemary Guerra, and Cecilia (Jeff) Stooksbury, and his brother, Manuel Infante; the nieces and nephews who were more like children to him; Nicole (Dave Forsythe) Infante-Forsythe, Celia (Kayvon) Karimi, Mike Hernandez, Angel (Jenny) Hernandez, and Jeffrey (Stephanie) Stooksbury; as well as too many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and extended family to count.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Apolinar Sr. and Cecilia; his brother, Apolinar “Bug” Infante Jr.; and his nephew, Manuel J. Infante.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, with a celebration of life service to begin at 6:00. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 9, 2026. All services will be held at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel (7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, Indiana 46410). Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery.

Miss you already cunado, but will definitely see you again someday God bless you.
My condolences to Manuel, Esther, Rosemary and Cecelia. I remember playing baseball with Julio, Manual and my other cousins at Edison. It seemed like yesterday. I run into Julio at Inland always smiling and talking about baseball. Great memories, miss those days.
