Atanacio “Papacho” R. Melero, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2026, in Merrillville, Indiana. Born on May 2, 1954, in Durango, Mexico, Papacho lived a life defined by deep love for his family, unwavering dedication to his work, and a quiet generosity that touched everyone who knew him. Though his life feels far too short to those who loved him most, his impact is immeasurable. 

Losing Papacho so suddenly has left a profound emptiness in the hearts of his family. One moment he was present—steady, loving, and dependable and the next, he was gone. There was no time to prepare, no final conversation, only the silence where his voice once was. Yet even in grief, his love continues to surround those he leaves behind. 

Papacho was a man of few words but with the biggest heart. A natural jokester with a gentle spirit, he showed his love through everyday actions by showing up, listening without judgment, and offering wisdom rooted in kindness. His presence alone made people feel safe, valued, and understood. He was a responsible and devoted father who worked tirelessly to ensure his children had opportunities and comforts he himself did not have growing up. 

For 53 years, Papacho shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Maria “Matita” L. Melero. Together, they created lasting memories, especially during their many trips to Mexico to visit family. Family was the center of Papacho’s world. He treasured gatherings, summer cookouts, and time spent surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Christmas was especially meaningful, and this past Christmas spent together as a family became a final, cherished blessing. 

Papacho dedicated 45 years of service as a track inspector for the Canadian National Railroad, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. He rarely missed a day of work, driven by his commitment to providing for his family. He was equally generous outside of work, always ready to help his siblings, relatives, friends, or anyone in need without hesitation and without expecting anything in return.

He found joy in music of all kinds, especially rancheras, tamborazo, and corridos. He loved gardening, watching YouTube videos, and enjoying the simple pleasures of daily life. 

Papacho is lovingly remembered by his children and grandchildren: 

• Daughter Francisca Alvarado, son-in-law Jose Alvarado, and grandson Angel Alvarado 
• Daughter Betty Martinez, son-in-law Salvador Martinez, grandchildren Salvador Jr., Selva, and Stevan Martinez, and great-grandson Emiliano Lorenzo Martinez 
• Son Higinio Melero, daughter-in-law Antala Melero, and grandchildren Higinio Jr. and Antonio Melero 
• Son Eloy Melero and grandchildren Ryan, Kyle, Maximus, Alana Loren, Gabriella, and Ariella Melero 

He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. 

Papacho is survived by his siblings: Silvia Melero, Maria Luque, Matilde Aguinanga, Luis Martinez, Gregorio Melero, Luciano Melero, Alejandro Melero, and Alberto Melero. He was preceded in death by his parents, Higinio Melero and Consuelo Rios, and his brothers Onesimo Melero and Tomas Melero. 

Though his passing was sudden and deeply painful, Papacho’s love did not end with his death. It lives on in the values he instilled, the memories he created, and the lives he shaped. He is carried forward in hearts, in actions, and in love every single day.
