REMEMBERING

Judith "Judy" Schipani

1940

-

2025

Judith A. Schipani, 85 years old, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 26th, 2025.

She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and living life to the fullest. Her vibrant personality made every event fun and memorable for all through her joy and laughter. Her greatest love by far was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was fiercely devoted to those in her life and continually wanted to be a blessing to them in any way she could. Her generous and caring ways were always evident, and she never turned down an opportunity to help someone in need. Whether it was hosting someone for the holidays or offering her God given gifts and talents to support those she loved, Judy’s selflessness was undeniable.

Judy was a restaurateur her whole life and was well known for her successful restaurants, including the Old Mill in Merrillville and Billy’s in San Francisco. She was always cooking and baking delicious meals and desserts for everyone she knew, but especially for those in their time of need. Food was truly the way she expressed love to the people in her life.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Christina (Kevin) McQueeney and Ben (Amie) Luna; Grandchildren: Ashley, Joshua (Stacy), Zachary, Weston (Jackie), Jaclyn (Derek), and Christian (Cailtin); Great Grandchildren: Noah, Esther, and Ana; Brothers: Doug Oppman, Paul Oppman, Chuck Oppman; special friend Robert Rios, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death is her beloved daughter, Carmen Luna-Hogan; former husband, Bill Schipani; and brothers, Richard Oppman, Bernard Oppman, and David Oppman.

To honor her lifelong passion of preparing meals for others and her generous spirit, in lieu of flowers please send donations to: Catholic Charities Food Pantry 940 Broadway, Gary, In 46402. Please put in the check memo: FOOD PURCHASE ONLY or go to Catholic Charites, diocese of Gary website and donate to the food pantry.

Judy was my mother ( Marge Amatulli ) best friend. They had such wonderful times together, which many times included us, Tyrie, John and Patti.
Judy was a member of the family. Never was there a dull moment, she loved to participate in our cookouts and holidays.
She was self made and strong as they come… the love she gave was immeasurable.
We loved her as well…
Our deepest sympathy to her family… God Bless Her

We are so shocked and saddened to hear of Judy’s passing. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and also a best friend to our mother Marge Amatulli. I recall all the laughs they used to have and shared many vacations together. Our prayers and sympathy goes out to all of your family. We are presently in Florida otherwise we would attend the services.

My sincerest condolences to the family. Judy was a dear friend. I met her on the River Pointe Ladies Golf League. She was so special to me. She could hit the golf ball long and straight. She had a beautiful spirit and was always giving me gifts. I miss her. To God Be the Glory. We all knew how much she loved her family. Rest my friend in our Saviors hands. 😢💔❤️

Love & Prayers. May God surround you with peace at this time. Judy Schipani, or Mrs. Luna as I knew her growing up, was truly one of a kind. Our families lived across the street from each other on Hayes, and although we have all moved on from our roots, those roots run deep. The neighbor who watched me grow up was fiercely dedicated to her children and was unafraid to take on a parental role for other kids in the neighborhood as well. We all learned valuable lessons from her.

Judy was generous with her home, and my brothers would certainly attest to that. She always looked out for my mom, who was a widow; she would often send over items that her daughters had outgrown. One of my favorite outfits was the communion dress that Carman wore for her first communion; I wore it for mine.

To Ben, Aime, Chrissy, and Kevin, your children and all family members, my heart breaks for you. Family is forever, and take comfort in knowing that we will all meet again one day. I understand that it is hard to care for and watch a parent age. Blessings to your families for all that everyone did to ensure Judy’s life was full and that she was loved. Judy, give my brothers Frank and Matt a hug.

Eternal rest grant unto Judy, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
