REMEMBERING

Teresa Guzman

1959

-

2025

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Teresa Guzman, of Merrillville, Indiana, announces her passing on August 28, 2025, at Southlake Methodist Hospital at the age of 66.

She is survived by her children: Mathew Kenny, Reuben Love, and Victoria Guzman. She will also be lovingly remembered as grandmother to: Angel Love, Gabriella Allison, David “DJ” Johnson, Jayden Kenny, Jasmine Kenny, and Jaren Kenny; and great grandmother to Micah and Aveah Love. She also leaves behind her siblings: Angela Butler, Rebecca Pearson, and Tony (Tomi) Guzman; nieces and nephews: Raquel (James) Lynch, Tabitha (Stephen Shultz) Pearson, Arthur Butler, Issac Guzman, Athena Guzman, Riana Guzman, Samara “Sammi” Lynch, Galadriel “Glady” Shultz, Danenerys “Danni” Shultz; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, especially her wonderful neighbors from across the street.

Teresa is preceded in death by her parents, Roberto Guzman and Naomi Herrera Thompson; sons, Timothy Jerome “TJ” Love and Derrick L. Christian “Chris” Love; and grandparents: Jesus and Maria Guzman and Carmen Herrera Thompson.

Teresa excelled in everything she put her mind to. She graduated from Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana, in 1977 in the top 10% of her class with honors. She went on to earn a degree as an x-ray tech and put it to good use at Mercy Hospital in Gary. When MRI machines were introduced, she furthered her education in that field and worked as an MRI tech at Northlake Methodist Hospital followed by an over 20 year career at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago.

Teresa loved music, especially classical, Motown, and funk. She was an exceptional violinist and was first chair in many of the groups she performed with.

She was an avid knitter, seamstress, and artist, but her main passion was cooking. She will be fondly remembered as the one to text you at 4:00 AM with a wildly unique dish!
She volunteered when she was able for various agencies throughout Northwest Indiana as she has a love for teaching and helping others. Teresa was also a former commissioner for the Gary Historical Society under Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson.

She had the incredible ability to forgive without being asked and to accept forgiveness without words. Teresa Guzman will be immensely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will take place on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel (7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, In) from 10:00 AM until time of service at Noon. Interment to follow at Ridgelawn Mount Mercy Cemetery (4401 W. Ridge Road, Gary, In).

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. May the beautiful soul of Teresa Guzman rest in peace.

I was fourteen when I made my confirmation at Holy Angels Cathedral. I asked Naomi and Teresa to be my sponsor. They both took me shopping for my confirmation dress. I absolutely loved the dress they picked out for me. I was in awe of Teresa because she went to college at IU. I wanted to be as smart as she is. She holds a special place in my heart.
