REMEMBERING

Irene Mikovetz

1933

-

2025

Irene (Keen) Mikovetz, 92, currently of Crown Point and formerly of Griffith, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025. She was born on August 10, 1933, to Vern and Alma Keen who preceded her in death. On December 27, 1952, Irene married the love of her life, the late Charles “Mike” Mikovetz. He passed away in 2020 after 68 wonderful years of marriage.

Irene is survived by her loving children, Mitzi Sawalski, Marla Metros, Mindy Miller, and Mike (Audrey) Mikovetz; cherished grandchildren, Jason Pierce, Angela Moore, Nicolas Sawalski, Makenzie (Jerry) Jackson, Michael (Brianna) Mikovetz, and David Miller; beautiful great grandchildren, Emma and Elijah Ashbaugh, and Weston and Charlotte Jackson; brother, Leo (late Cindy) Keen; her favorite cousin, Richard Louie; one of her very best friends, Marilyn Niles; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and acquaintances.

In addition to her husband and parents, Irene was preceded in death by her siblings, Eva Johnson, Howard Keen, Ann (Virgil) Sarbon, and Donna (Ken) Baker.

Irene was a proud 1952 graduate of Griffith High School. She went on to own and operate Elaine Powers Figure Salons in Highland and Merrillville for many years. Irene was also devout in her Catholic faith, being a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Crown Point and Griffith and a member of the St. Mary’s Rosary & Altar Society in Crown Point for numerous years.

In her spare time, Irene could be found reading, spending time with her family and friends, attending church services, and traveling. She was notably an avid sports fan, her favorites being the Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, Indianapolis Colts, and golfer, Tiger Woods. Irene also loved watching any and all episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, keeping her mind sharp and creative each day.

Irene will best be remembered as a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.  She, along with all the love and joy she shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts she touched throughout her life. The family would like to thank the staff of Franciscan Hospice for their gentle care and support throughout Irene’s final days. The family would like to extend special thanks to Joyce Gertz from St. Mary’s Church, who visited to pray with Irene and offer her communion when she was bedridden.

Chapel services for Irene will be held at 1:00 PM with visitation from 10:00 AM until time of service on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN 46410. Burial will immediately follow services at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN.
