REMEMBERING

Cheryl Roper

2025

Cheryl Jean Roper (nee Ames), who was raised in Hobart and raised her family in Lake Station, has gone to see her Father at the age of 76. Our matriarch peacefully joined eternity on July 25th, while being surrounded by her loved ones. Cheryl was a beloved daughter of God, and the worlds most loving mother and grandmother. She was even referred to as a saint amongst women. Cheryl got to complete the most important item on her bucket list twice. Reading the Holy Bible in 2 different versions from beginning to end, was one of her most shining accomplishments!

Cheryl was a devoted wife of 14 years, and was the most amazing mother after the time of Jesus and Mary. She is survived by her 5 children, that the love of her life, Lewis Andrew Roper III blessed her with. Carrie (Troy Boy) Gray and their 4 children: Brandon, Kyle (My Little Happy Feet), Zachary and Emma. Roberta (Erik) Donovan and her 2 children: Cory (Erin) and Tess (Kodi). Tracy Dwyer (nee Roper) and her 3 daughters: Amber, Joanna and Gracie (Roger). Lewis Roper IV and his 2 daughters: Maja and Isadora. Nickolas (Cheryl’s favorite daughter-in-law Tricia) and their 2 daughters: Alexandria and Abigail. 4 great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Austin, Jianna, and Aeros, and her baby brother Robert Lyle Ames. She is also survived by her other brothers and sisters Clifford (Sandy) Shearer, John Scott, Beth Barney, Margee Salisbury and her amazing sister-in-law, Rose Ames. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents Paul E. Ames Sr. and Dorothy L. Shearer, brother Paul E. Ames Jr., brother-in-law Steve Salisbury, sister Barbie Scott and son-in-law Brett (Bruno) Moreland. Cheryl was the aunt, great-aunt, and friend to many people that she loved dearly.

Cheryl sacrificed immensely by working extremely hard for many years to support her 5 children, and put them before herself at all times. Cheryl had many good times in front of a BINGO card and loved her Cocker Spaniels. Cheryl really loved all of God’s creation. From going fishing, to feeding neighborhood wildlife, to planting her flowers or growing her garden, she was in love with nature. Cheryl was also a patriot, with a deep love for her country and its flag!

Cheryl will leave behind a void that can never be filled, and she will be missed more than the rest of humanity will ever know. This world will truly miss her beautiful light. If the love in her heart could have been poured out, it would have easily filled all of the oceans and streams.

Visitation will be at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Hobart on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Her funeral service will begin there at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, and following that she will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Park in Hobart. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Wounded Warriors Project.

Tracy, Roberta and the rest of the Roper clan, I can’t put into words how much I will miss your mom. I haven’t spoken to her recently but I wish I had. I’ll never forget our morning coffee on either her picnic bench or mine, talking about everything and nothing, laughing and crying. She was such a good friend to me, and a pretty good shoulder to cry on.

I’ll see you again my friend. Have the coffee ready. I’ll never forget you.

With my deepest condolences.
