REMEMBERING

Oscar C. Rodriguez Sr.

1948

-

2025

Oscar Charles Rodriguez, Sr., 76, of Merrillville, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home. He was born on November 13, 1948, in East Chicago, IN, to the late Antonio and Margaret (Slampyak) Rodriguez.

Oscar is survived by his children, Stephen (Kristina) Rodriguez, and Natalie (Matthew) Lanternier; grandchildren, Blake Rodriguez, Brittany Rodriguez, John Lanternier, Elise Lanternier, Claire Lanternier, Gabriella Rodriguez, and Sophia Rodriguez; great grandson, Hiro Serna; siblings, Ed Rodriguez, Margaret Morris, Donna Rodriguez, and Linda (Bob) Muha; daughter-in-law, Amy Rodriguez; and a loving host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.

In addition to his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by his loving wife, who he would refer to as “Beauty”, Gloria (Flores) Rodriguez; son, Oscar Rodriguez, Jr.; grandson, Sebastian Rodriguez; brothers, Tony, Leo, and Richard Rodriguez; sister-in-law, Debbie Rodriguez; and brother-in-law, Gene Morris.

Oscar proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served in Siagon and Bien Hoa in 1968 and 1969. After the army, he worked as an electrician for Inland Steel and the School City of East Chicago. He was also a lifetime member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.

Oscar was a devout Catholic, being a lifetime member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville. He would volunteer his time to assist with church activities, fish fry functions, and was even an usher up until his passing. Oscar’s life was led by his faith, something beautiful that was passed on to generations with many special memories shared.

In his spare time, Oscar could be found singing or whistling, dancing with his wife or grandchildren, grabbing a bite to eat, watching TV or movies, visiting estate sales, or storytelling of his days in the Army. Most importantly, family time meant everything to him, as he was always beyond proud of his children and grandchildren and adored his lovely wife. His family will hold dear the many sayings he would share and the love he had for all.

Oscar will best be remembered as an influential, encouraging, and loving man to all who knew him. He, along with all the love and joy he shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts he touched throughout his life.

Services for Oscar will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Rendina Funeral Home, 5100 Cleveland Street, Gary, IN 46408, with visitation from 4 PM to 6 PM and funeral service to begin at 6 PM. Fr.
